The composition.
The visible writing gesture is the strongest basis for the descriptive title. The woman has not been securely identified as Radha, Shakuntala, Saraswati or another literary or divine figure. Water birds alone are insufficient to identify Saraswati, especially without a secure instrument or other attribute. The large form behind the woman reads as a decorated bolster or seat, not a verified animal mount. The pen and writing surface evoke communication or letter writing as a visual theme; the contents, recipient and literary episode are unknown. The pond and foliage create a contemplative garden setting without establishing a named place.
