Lakshmi - Narasimha

GG-PT-022

A lion-faced four-armed deity sits with a smaller female figure on his lap. The lion face, conch and discus strongly support identification as Narasimha with Lakshmi, a devotional form of Vishnu and his consort.

The composition.

Narasimha is the man-lion incarnation of Vishnu. In the seated consort form the composition emphasises a composed devotional presence, unlike the violent narrative of the destruction of Hiranyakashipu. Lakshmi’s identity is probable from her placement with Narasimha, while a maker’s title would confirm the specific local form. The raised discus and conch are conventional Vishnu attributes and visibly support the reading. A spotted hood-like form curves behind the crown; the exact serpent name and number of heads are not verified. The image does not depict a securely identified historical temple or certify a particular ritual use.

These readings describe visible features and possible subjects. A maker-confirmed title, provenance, materials and the identities of unresolved figures are not yet documented.
